Common Questions
Frequently asked questions
How long does installation take?
Most standard stove installations are completed in a single day — typically 6 to 8 hours. More complex jobs involving chimney lining, hearth construction, or bespoke surrounds may take two days. We'll always give you an accurate time estimate in your quote.
Do I need planning permission?
In most cases, no. Installing a stove or fireplace is exempt development under Irish planning law, provided it meets Building Regulations. We handle all Building Reg notifications on your behalf and issue the correct compliance certificate after the work is complete.
What's included in the free survey?
Our free survey covers a full assessment of your chimney structure and condition, flue diameter and height, room size and air supply, and your fuel preferences. We'll also discuss your budget and aesthetic goals so we can recommend the right appliance and surround for you.
What guarantees do I get?
All J.Roberts Solid Fuel Services installations come with a 5-year workmanship warranty covering all labour. Appliances carry the manufacturer's own warranty, which is typically 2 to 5 years depending on the brand. Certificates provided with every job.
Can I supply my own stove?
Yes, in some circumstances. We're happy to install a stove you've purchased, provided it is Ecodesign-ready, appropriately sized for your room and flue, and meets current Irish Building Regulations. We'll advise at survey stage whether your chosen model is suitable.
What fuel should I use?
For wood burning stoves, we recommend kiln-dried hardwood with a moisture content below 20%. Wet wood produces far less heat and creates harmful creosote build-up. We advise against the use of manufactured firelogs or treated wood. We'll provide a full fuel guide at handover.
How often should I sweep my chimney?
We recommend sweeping your chimney at least once a year for occasional users, and twice a year if you use your stove regularly through the winter months. Regular sweeping prevents creosote build-up and reduces the risk of chimney fires. We can recommend a certified sweep in your area.
